Untitled (after Myung Soon Kim) (2019)
for Solo Saenghwang

gamin, Saenghwang

Recorded at Harvestworks by Kevin Ramsay

This solo piece for saenghwang (a Korean free reed mouth organ derived
from the Chinese sheng) was written in response to a poem, “Untitled (1925),” by the Korean poet Myung Soon Kim, also a writer, journalist, and actress. When I first read this poem, I was fascinated by the soft sound of the poem, vivid and sensitive, while the emotions inside the letters were agitating — the saenghwang while embracing the bursting sound in harmony captures the changes in texture, melodies, and the residue of the sound.

Myung Soon Kim was a strong advocate for women’s rights in her work against the sentiment and the culture of the era in the Korean society even as her professional life was often faced with many obstacles implicitly put in place by her male colleagues. Feeling that she was forced to leave, she disappeared from the world until she died at a mental hospital in Japan in 1951.
