Angels Broken (2019) for String Quartet, Piri/Taepyungso and Electronics

gamin, Piri/Taepyungso

Carnegie Hill Concerts Chamber Players:
Pauline Kim Harris, Violin

Kallie Sugatski, Viola
Christopher Gross, Cello

Recorded at Harvestworks by Kevin Ramsay

*Angels Broken*, originally commissioned by MusicUnitesUS from
Brandeis University, is written for taepyungso (Korean double-reed
wind instrument in the shawm or oboe family), piri (Korean cylindrical
double-reed bamboo oboe), string quartet, and electronics. It is a
musical documentation of the “comfort women” — women and girls
who were forced into sexual slavery by the Imperial Japanese Army
in occupied countries and territories before and during World War II.
Drawn from three distinct sources of inspiration, flowing in contrasting
musical styles of East & West and old & new: “Silence Broken" by Dai
Sil Kim-Gibson, various printed and recorded interviews of comfort
women, and field recordings of singing by Ok Seon Park et al.*
The small requiem embraces the recorded voices and is amplified by
the strings. The slowest Korean changdan (rhythmic cycle) jinyangjo is
used – the fundamental skeleton of composition in gugak traditional
Korean music. **Original recordings provided by Mun-Ho Hur, a
producer at Daegu MBC in S. Korea.*
